A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews entered the property close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away after the explosion was located shortly later. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
