A minimum of 64 people were killed in a police operation targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is seen as the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.

State officials stated no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, in addition to multiple guns.

The joint operation by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are presently concealed in the city.
